Paul is one of the country’s most experienced applied ecologists.

Following first degree (1st Class Hons) in 1990, he was recruited by the University of Sheffield’s environmental consultancy (ECUS).  Over 10 years at ECUS, he built a team of post-grad & post-doc ecologists, and a network of specialist associates throughout and beyond the University.  Paul left his position as Principal Ecologist when ECUS left the University; establishing PBA Applied Ecology on the eve of the new Millennium.

Paul works at the highest levels in business and conservation, working confidently with leading associates, practitioners and contractors providing high quality services in applied ecology. Delivering applied research and consultancy projects as far afield as Siberia and the South Atlantic, Expert Witness services at major Inquiries, and with 20 years continuous practice experience, Paul now leads a high quality team of dedicated PBA professionals.  In addition to academic and professional publications and presentations, recent mass media appearances have included national press, BBC regional and national radio, and BBC regional and national TV appearances. Paul is a committee member of the CIEEM, Yorks and Humber branch.

 

Neil Wilkinson

Neil Wilkinson

Senior Ecologist

Neil designs and manages projects, specialising in aquatic investigations. The majority of his work involves macroinvertebrate and fisheries surveys.  His macroinvertebrate projects have included sampling, identification, analysing data with indices and RICT, with an emphasis on pollution investigation. Fisheries projects have included electrofishing surveys and fish recues, scale aging and population statistics. Neil has also worked on WFD projects and classifications, with sampling for macroinvertebrates and diatom. Neil has also undertakes bat surveys, great crested newt surveys, white clawed crayfish surveys and mitigation works.

Neil graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in ecology and a master’s degree in biodiversity and conservation. Outside of work, Neil’s main interests lie in the outdoors, cricket, walking and running.

 

Andrew Blincow

Andrew Blincow

Senior Ecologist

Andrew is an ecologist specialising in the survey and investigation of aquatic ecosystems and their associated species. He is experienced in working with landowners and partner organisations (i.e. Environment Agency and Natural England) to protect and improve sites of ecological interest through the implementation of appropriate design and management regimes. This has included providing technical guidance and assistance to implement river and floodplain habitat restoration and creation. With experience in the management of water engineering projects, he can apply capability in pollution prevention and control and water management. Andrews experience also extends to the terrestrial environment, with practice in bat and botanical surveys to name a few.

Andrew graduated from the University of Leeds in 2012 with an MSc in Biodiversity and Conservation. Previous to this, he gained considerable ecology and conservation experience in the Wetland team at the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, and environmental industry experience from a position as an Environment Monitoring Technician within the Landfill Industry. Andrew is an outdoor enthusiast and takes full advantage of our situation within the Yorkshire.

 

 Elizabeth Judson

Financial Manager & Company Secretary

Responsibility for the financial administration and smooth running of the office and systems. Her role includes monitoring progress of projects and communication with partners and clients. 

With a background in Environmental Science and over 20 years at Malham Tarn Field Centre, Elizabeth takes more than a passing interest in the projects that PBA are involved with.

 

Ian Fleming

Ian Fleming

Operations Manager

Ian brings to PBA over 30 years senior management experience in the construction, civil engineering and property services sectors.  A member of the Chartered Management Institute, former chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and qualified Executive Coach, Ian has been a board member of a training and development company and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.  In his spare time he manages an extensive north country game fishery for a long established and famous angling association in an ecologically sustainable way.

Ben Shepherd

Project Ecologist

Ben undertakes a wide range of ecological surveys, including macroinvertebrate, fish, and bird surveys. Work has included assisting with shepherd and brown surveys for moorland birds and white clawed crayfish trapping and surveys. Ben has also assisted with fish surveys, fish recues, and macroinvertebrate work. He has completed digital mapping for projects including phase one surveys.

Ben graduated from the University of Newcastle with an honours degree in Applied Biology in 2014 having worked extensivley with us throughout his degree course.

Ben enjoys playing both cricket and golf in his spare time.
